Wausaukee, a village of 573 people, is centrally located in Marinette County on Highway 141, about one hour north of Green Bay. The name Wausaukee comes from the Menominee Indians, the native settlers of this area, and means “among the rolling hills.” It was founded in 1887 to support the logging industry. The village is home to a number of small businesses, which include Newingham’s Supper Club, Family Dollar, Sal’s Grocery and Wausaukee Lumber and Hardware. It is also home to the Marinette County Fairgrounds. Evergreen Park is a beautiful place for a picnic, sand volleyball, tennis or RV camping. A popular stopping point for tourists and area residents during the spring, summer and fall seasons is the Ice Cream Station. Exxon Motel provides lodging. Wausaukee is also home to the Bigwoods Realty main office, located on Highway 141, across from Newingham’s.
